IMDb

This documentary follows the story of Silibil & Brains, an extremely popular hip-hop duo from California... but the kicker here is that they are in fact not popular at all and actually hailing from Scotland. They convinced the UK that they were huge US rappers and lied their way to an almost contract with Sony, this documentary follows them from th start in Scotland, to how they obtained their new personas, to the heart-ache and downfall of the group.

There's not a lot that can be said about a documentary really... one of this style anyway. It was a very interesting subject for definite but lacked in a way... It was made for TV but almost felt like it was somebodies personal YouTube project that they wanted to make. The two heroes, Gavin Bain and Billy Boyd come off as likable at first but you just grow to find them very annoying as it goes on. Not due to their fake American personas but just how they acted with each other. Throughout there is that over-used and very annoying intentionally bad animation style, as you can see in the poster. It didn't really add anything useful to the feel of the documentary I didn't think. A lot of docs tend to have two subjects crossing over in some way throughout, this almost tried to substitute the lack of a second narrative with shitty animations. It's a very interesting story and insane how far the lies went but it didn't really leave you with anything afterwards. It's nothing you'd be so amazed by that you would want to watch it again, like Anvil: The Story of Anvil. That was a story of a band that pretty much invented Thrash Metal and were completely out-shined by the likes of Metallica and other metal bands like White Snake and early Bon Jovi. That doc can be watched many times over, it's extremely enjoyable as well as interesting. I know they're not similar docs but in terms of music and with the struggles they faced, they could be in some way comparable and this one just lacked a lot. it'd definitely worth a look but it's nothing special. That said though, they're fairly excellent rappers!
